stone free

by Rachel Lynch

For me, rock n roll has always been about taking responsibility for my actions and creating my lifestyle, not about some slip into debauchery.

And I learn something new about myself with each life I create. I am in perpetual awakening, so I never grow old.

Jimi Hendrix blasting from the speakers in my living room on this sunny Friday morning. I hear his words, I understand his motives. "Everyday in the week I'm in a different city, if I stay too long people try to pull me down."

I burn palo santo and rearrange the furniture. John Lennon used to live on this same block. Each morning, I run by his strawberry fields and slip into the park for an 8 mile run. My mind submerged in a lengthy playlist of whatever pleases me, and I begin to create everything you see here. All the words, images, song titles, and outfits were once just pictures in mind. I dream up everything I want to make manifest, sometimes at sub 7 minute mile pace. Running through the park now, I see the trees blooming. I have watched the seasons change here. I am connected to it all. I have endured the harshest winter here, with my hands numb by the time I get to Harlem, yet my mind is still free to create.

I'm a baby Prefontaine. Who once said, "Some people create with words, or with music, or with a brush and paints. I like to make something beautiful when I run." My creation is derived from motion.

So as I sit here in the stillness of my apartment, I often drift back and dream of when I will be running through Central Park's majestic beauty again. It is amongst the trees in perpetual motion that I am home.

And to me, that is rock n roll. That is freedom.
